Adventures in Music
Since 2000, 120 students, sponsored by Rotary clubs in other communities, have participated in "Adventures in Music" and been hosted by Comox Valley Rotarians in their homes. These students were enrolled in either the Pacific Jazz Workshop or the Orchestral and Chamber Music Program, each of two weeks duration, at the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre (CYMC). Click here to see what the students think of their experience. CYMC, which began operating in 1967, provides an excellent learning environment and oustanding faculty for students in both programs. CYMC counts among its alumni many well known, distinguished musicians, the most famous of which is jazz great Diana Krall of Nanaimo, BC. Students are enrolled in either a one or two week course, working with professionals individually and in ensembles. Sponsoring Rotary clubs subsidize the students' tuition and return airfare to Comox, B.C. Comox Valley Rotarians host the Rotary-sponsored students in their homes or in the homes of friends of Rotarians. Host families provide beds and most meals and transportation within the Comox Valley. This is an exciting opportunity for serious music students currently in grades 9, 10 or 11. The Rotary Clubs which sponsor students send very talented students from their areas, as evidenced by their performances at CYMC. In 2007 the Pacific Jazz Workshop will be held July 3rd – July 15th, and the Orchestra/Concert Band Music Program July 23rd – August 5th. Music students interested in taking part in this program should contact their local Rotary Club for more details.
